The Day The Sky Opened Up Over Escazu, Costa Rica

the sky opened up

It’s been a little over two years since a natural phenomenon took place in the skies above Escazu in Costa Rica, and people are still talking about it today.

On September 15, 2015, onlookers stopped in their tracks and looked up in awe as the clouds appeared to form a halo-like formation, shining a bright white light across an otherwise grey and dull sky.

Described by a cyclist who posted a video of the phenomenon online, it was as if it was ‘the end of times’ as the sky opened up in a heart-stopping display of nature.

Other than the fact that this was an unusual thing to witness, the occurrence got people talking, given the notable day of the year on which it took place.

Costa Rica Independence Day

September 15 marks the day Costa Rica (and the rest of Central America) became independent from Spain, which took place in 1821.

As the sky opened up above Escazu (as well as San Jose, Parrita, Pavas, and Hatillo) on this anniversary in 2015, speculation became rife that it was in fact an ‘act of God’.

As well as ‘the end of days’, many speculated that the clouds were ghostly ships, while others declared that it was the official sign of Rapture – associated with the second coming of Jesus Christ.

The Rapture specifically refers to the return of Christ in the clouds. The event is said to see Him remove all believers from the earth before the time of God’s wrath.

This wrath is said to occur when God finally chooses to defeat the Antichrist, eradicate evil, and establish His millennial kingdom.

Scientific Explanation

Nature experts who have commented on the day the sky opened up in Costa Rica have said that it was merely a case of ‘cloud iridescence’.

Although a rare occurrence, this has happened recently in Calfornia, South Carolina, and Australia as well.

The bright white and colorful bursts of light are caused when the sun’s beams are refracted by water droplets and ice crystals in the cloud.

Sometimes, this causes a part of the cloud to freeze and sink down in the skies, causing a ‘fallstreak hole’. This is called a ‘fire rainbow’ by some.

The rings of color alter, disappear and reappear as the cloud moves and changes shape, making this an ever-evolving phenomenon. No two iridescence clouds will look the same.

The term cloud iridescence comes from Iris, the Greek personification of the rainbow.

The Day the Sky Opened Up

The YouTuber who captured and posted the video of the Costa Rica clouds captioned it with: ‘The sky opened up as if it were the end of times. It was truly a beautiful glimpse of what our God has in store for us on the day he comes back.’

Whether this was, in fact, the case is up to you to decide. While the Rapture is not directly referenced in the Bible, it is alluded to in 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18 and 1 Corinthians 15:50-44.

While this event has not resulted in the Rapture or the ‘end of times’, many believe it was indeed a taste of what will one day come.
