Understanding the Meanings of Heaven

In the Bible, there are three meanings to the word heaven. According to the Hebrew word Shamyim or the Greek word Ouranos, heaven means God’s dwelling place.

In Psalm 103:19, the Bible says that God’s Kingdom rules over all, and His throne is in heaven. In Ezekiel 28:16, the Bible mentions the Mountains of God, which means heaven even has mountain ranges.

In Psalms 8:3, the Bible paints another dimension to paradise. It says that God made the moon and stars and all the planets and galaxies. The Bible also refers to these things as being part of heaven and the work of God’s hands. Lastly, the atmosphere that surrounds the earth is called the heavens in Genesis 1:7-8.

The Bible is very clear on the life of Jesus and his ascended to heaven. Jesus was nailed to the cross and died. He was put into the ground and arose on the third day. He walked the earth for 40 days before he ascended.

In John 14:2-3, the Bible says that Jesus was going away to prepare a place for His children, and He will come again to receive you. He also states that there are many mansions in and if it were not true, he would have never told you. He’s going to prepare a place for you.

What Is Heaven Like?

When it comes to descriptions, the Bible specifically indicated five things that you can count on to be in Heaven.

1.) We All Will Get Crowns

Did you know there are five heavenly crowns that are mention in the New Testament that will be awarded to all believers? They are the imperishable crown, the crown of rejoicing, the crown of righteousness, the crown of glory, and the crown of life.

2.) Mansions & Vineyards

The Bible says in Isaiah 65:21 that man will build houses to inhabit. They will also plant vineyards and gardens to provide food.

3.) There Will Be No Temple

Revelation 21:22 states: “I saw no temple in it, for the Lord God the Almighty and the Lamb are its temple.” Which makes perfect sense.

4.) It Will Be The Perfect Place

In Isaiah 65:23, the Bible says that the lamb and wolf will lay down together. The ox and lions shall eat straw side by side. There will be no fighting, no strife, and everything will coexist in perfect harmony.

5.) Behold, All Things Are New

In Revelation 21:2, John saw that city coming down, and he called it the new heaven and new earth. He saw the holy city, New Jerusalem coming out of the heavens. He stated that God prepared this place and was like a husband waiting for His bride. He also made mention that there were no more seas, but it does mention a Crystal River.

6.) There Will Be a River of Life

In Revelation 22:1-2, the apostle John has a vision and describes the river of the water of life as “bright as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb through the middle of the street of the city”.

7.) Pearly Gates & Streets of Gold

In Revelation 21:21 it says “the twelve gates were twelve pearls; each one of the gates was a single pearl. And the street of the city was pure gold, like transparent glass.”

8.) There Will Be No Day or Night

According to Revelation 21:23-25 it clearly says: “And the city has no need of sun or moon to shine on it, for the glory of God gives it light, and its lamp is the Lamb. By its light will the nations walk, and the kings of the earth will bring their glory into it, and its gates will never be shut by day—and there will be no night there.”

9.) There Will Be No Tears & No More Pain

Up there, no more sorrow or pain will exist. There will be no tears, and all the former things will pass away according to Revelation 21:4.

10.) The Tree of Life Will Yield 12 Kinds of Fruit

This will be one treat I can’t wait to taste. In Revelation 22:2 it says: “Through the middle of the street of the city; also, on either side of the river, the tree of life with its twelve kinds of fruit, yielding its fruit each month. The leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations.”

Perception Versus Reality

Many artists create pictures of their perception of heaven. They draw a posh place where spirits are floating by on clouds while playing harps. However, their perception is not congruent with the Bible.

In John 14:2-3, it says that anyone who accepts salvation will have a mansion. These are tangible homes that people will inhabit. No one will live on a cloud playing the harp. Rather, there will be gardens and things to do.

Those who question the vineyards in paradise might want to read Matthew 26:29. Jesus told His disciples that they shouldn’t drink from the fruit of the vine again until they drank it in His’ Father’s Kingdom. By reading this passage, it shows that there will be real vineyards there to make wine.

In some places, the Bible refers to heaven as a far away country. The world was a natural paradise before sin entered. The Garden of Eden was plentiful with trees and fruit. There were animals too.

When God first created the universe, he wanted humanity to live in peace. He did not intend us to be on clouds floating around. He gave man heaven on earth. However, sin interrupted His plans, and it was the fall of man.

Angels In Heaven

Scientists are just beginning to understand the solar system and its complexities. While planets and stars have been known about for centuries, the galaxies far beyond and the thought of other intelligent life forms have remained a mystery.

However, you must broaden your horizons to realize that outside of this universe is another country. Perhaps, it’s a universe all within itself. The Bible calls this place heaven, and it cannot be compared with anything here on earth.

The Bible often speaks about the angels in heaven. It speaks about them in both being in both heaven and on the earth. In Job 38:7, it says “While the morning stars sang together and all the angels shouted for joy?”

In 2 Chronicles 18:18, the prophet Micaiah said that he saw God sitting on His throne. He also saw the hosts of heaven standing with him on both His right and left hand.

Unselfish Love In New Jerusalem

Relationship troubles abound on the earth, but in Heaven, everyone will obey God’s commandments regarding love. Since God is love, according to 1 John 4:8, everyone that inhabits the land will be filled with the love of God.

Man Will Have A Physical Body

One of the best parts of going to heaven is getting rid of any pain or disease that you suffered with in life. According to I Corinthians 15:40-49, you will have a physical body, but it will be made new.

You will be transformed in a moment in the twinkling of an eye to take on a glorious form. Jesus had a physical body after his resurrection, but He reminded us that spirit doesn’t have flesh and bones in Luke 24:39.

Another advantage of this kingdom is seeing all our loved ones who are believers have passed on before. In I Corinthians 13:12, the Bible says we shall know man just as they are now.

The New Heaven and the New Earth

Those who are faithful to God and His Word will inherit the new earth. The inconceivable becomes believable when you understand what the Bible says about your future.

Taking your place on the planet earth, in a perfected state, seems like a dream come true. This planet will be restored as it was before sin entered.

Life here will be without sickness, pain, crime, war, fighting, or any of the other things that have destroyed it. According to Revelation 21:1-4, the new earth will be joy beyond our imagination.

There’s a blessed hope for all of God’s Children. Jesus will return to the earth a second time. This time, He is not coming in secret. The Bible says that every eye will see Him in Revelation 1:7.

The Son of Man shall appear in the clouds and call His bride away. Those who have accepted Christ will go with Him to be in the clouds. There, you will live and reign with God for a thousand years.

After the thousand years are complete, every man will face the Great White Throne of Judgement. The Lamb’s Book of Life will identify who will inhabit the new earth. Those who are not listed on the pages will go to the lake of fire to burn in eternal torment.

The Bible also says that every knee is going to bow and every tongue confess that He is Lord. Alas, God will recreate the earth, and those who reigned with him will now inhabit the earth.

Controversies About Heaven & Hell

Many popular beliefs are floating around today that are not biblically based. For instance, when you die, you don’t go to heaven or hell immediately.

In fact, the Bible in Daniel 12:2 says that we will sleep in the grave until the resurrection. The dead in Christ will rise first, then those who are alive and remain will be called up together to join Him in the clouds.

You are not granted an automatic entrance to heaven just by living a good life. According to the Bible, in Revelation 21:27, it says that only those whose name is written in the Lamb’s Book of Life can enter there.

Your name being on those pages is the qualifying factor. Do you know if your name is written there? Are you are true Christian? The reality is that the time of the return of Jesus is close. You must be saved above anything else.

You must be secure in your relationship with God and have a prayerful life to know that if you should die tomorrow, you know where you will spend eternity.

How Can I Be Saved? What Do I Need to Do?

“Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved” (Acts 16:31). God has already done all of the work. All you must do is receive, in faith, the salvation God offers (Ephesians 2:8-9).

Fully trust in Jesus alone as the payment for your sins. Believe in Him, and you will not perish (John 3:16). God is offering you salvation as a gift. All you have to do is accept it. Jesus is the way of salvation (John 14:6).
