What would you do with six-hundred million dollars?
That’s how much Mel Gibson’s The Passion of the Christ earned in box offices worldwide.
There’s no doubt that this monumental film made an unforgettable impact on believers and non-believers alike. Even secular movie critics like Roger Ebert had to give it four out of four stars.
This biblical drama made headlines around the globe for its violent depictions of the last 12 hours of Jesus’s life. But did you know these six unbelievable facts about this Academy Award-winning film?
1. The Passion of the Christ
Do you remember the moving scene where Jesus is forced to bear his cross? It’s a metaphor relevant to any Christian’s life.
The actor who played Jesus, Jim Caviezel, separated his shoulder when the 150-pound cross was dropped on him.
Remember that pained face you saw in the film? That’s not just good acting.
2. Busting Box Office Records
Despite its controversial status, this film had moviegoers busting down the doors of their local box offices.
In fact, The Passion of the Christ sold more pre-tickets than any other film in history. The final box-office earnings came to a staggering $611,899,420.
3. Jim as Jesus
To pull off the most difficult role any actor has ever had, Jim Caviezel needed to do a lot of work. Part of that work was cosmetic.
Makeup artists molded a prosthetic nose for him, as well as a raised hairline. Editors even digitally altered Caviezel’s blue eyes to a shade of brown during post-production.
4. Spiritually Struck
Are you familiar with Jan Michelini? He’s the assistant director of The Passion of the Christ, and he was struck by lightning during the filming of it.
Actually, he was struck by lightning twice.
The first time, he was carrying an umbrella. But the second time? That was while Caviezel was carrying the cross.
5. The Spiritual Score
Mel Gibson almost chose to skip composing a score for this film. It’s a good thing he didn’t.
The beautiful orchestral arrangements, composed by the talented John Depney, received an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Music Score. It also earned a 2005 Dove award.
6. The Passion of the Jim
No one can tell Jim Caviezel that he didn’t have one of the hardest jobs in the world during the filming of this epic movie.
Not only did he actually suffer carrying the cross, but he felt real pain during the whipping scenes as well.
An actor accidentally whipped Caviezel for real, knocking the wind out of him. He was then whipped again and instinctively jerked his arm, badly scraping his wrist. Pull out your copy of the film and see for yourself!
7.) The Passion of the Christ, Part 2
Mel Gibson has already confirmed he is working on a sequel to this memorable film, focusing on the resurrection of Jesus.
He’s taking it seriously, estimating that it will take at least three years to pull off this amazing theological endeavor.
