Derek Carr — you’ve seen him making waves on the gridiron as a superstar quarterback for the NFL’s Oakland Raiders. But perhaps one of the things he’s most known for what he does off the field.

He’s a superstar messenger for Jesus Christ.

But it wasn’t always that way. Here’s a look at Carr’s message of faith in the NFL and how it may impact your life and relationship with Christ.

Let’s get started!

What Derek Carr Has to Say about Faith

In a tweet last year, Carr emphasized that others called his football career work, but he called it worship. And he was not ashamed to belong to Christ, the one who made his football career possible.

Carr in the tweet went on to say that God had given him a number of blessings, causing his cup to overflow. These blessings include not only the opportunity to play professional football but also his friends and family. His passion continues to be to use the platform God has given him to do the Lord’s work.

And he most definitely is. Through his social media messages, press interviews and behavior on the field, Carr is clearly using the attention he’s receiving to expose his followers and fans to God’s unquestionable and incomparable faithfulness and love.

His Message about Tithing

Last year, Carr signed a contract for a whopping $125 million, which he will receive over a five-year period. At the time, this contract was the richest one in the NFL’s history.

Carr will essentially receive $25 million per year for the next five years. When press conference reporters asked him about his plans for the money, he said he would first pay his tithe — something he had always done since his college days.

This move is in line with God’s biblical command to give the first tenth of what we earn to the Lord, found in the Bible verse of Malachi 3:10. When we test Him by doing this, He will be faithful to bless us beyond measure.

The exciting thing for me, money-wise, honestly, is that this money is going to help a lot of people … not only in this country, but in countries around the world.”

However, Carr said he planned to go above even that. He said he would contribute $700 as part of a scholarship check. And he would also get his wife, the love of his life, “something nice.”

“Probably Chick-fil-A,” He said. “I’ve been eating clean… I’ll probably get some Chick-fil-A.”

What made him most excited about the money he will receive over the next few years is that he can use it to bless others. And not just people in the United States but also those in other parts of the world.

His Message about His Past

As the quarterback for the Oakland Raiders, Carr is proud to share his faith in Christ. But he didn’t always feel this way.

A video that was released in 2014 shows him explaining how Christ started to become real to him when his wife — only a friend then — wrote him a letter saying that he was not the individual she thought he was.

This letter motivated Carr to ask God to forgive him for his sins and to drastically transform his lifestyle. In addition, he asked his team members to serve as his accountability partners. Now, he’s excited to lead a lifestyle that is pleasing to God.
