Grief can feel like a long, slow walk through a dark and rainy night.

How are you supposed to feel normal after your bottom has dropped out, and you’re faced with the task of arranging a funeral, supporting friends and family, and honoring your loved one’s memory?

Grief is a different process for everyone and the last thing you want to hear while mourning is the advice of someone who could never understand what you’re going through.

It’s during these times that scripture holds a singular place in our hearts. It seems as though the only stable part of life is the word of the Bible. Bible verses for mourning are incredibly helpful to try and move through such difficult times.

3 Bible Verses For Mourning

Psalm 23:4

“Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.”

Sometimes these dark valleys can be in our mind. Surrender these dark places to Jesus and he will comfort you.

Psalm 30:5

“Weeping may endure for a night, but joy comes in the morning.”

In this passage, the word “night” may be taken more metaphorically. The long night of grieving can last for weeks, months, or years. After we endure the night, we can rejoice in the fact that we had the time that we did, and let that feeling of joy overcome the sadness that we once felt.

Matthew 5:4

“Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.”

If we lose someone who we didn’t think was close, their absence brings a wealth of memories and meaning that we didn’t recognize when they were here. The force of these memories is more powerful when we knew the person well.

When we are in the absence of someone, we can recognize the meaning, and effect that they had on our lives.

The meaning that we derive from these experiences can push us to heal and grow because we’re dwelling in the love that we have for the deceased.

Psalm 34:18

“The lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.”

The dark night of mourning can seem like it will never end. Each loss is different and holds different challenges.

It’s important to remember this bible verse for mourning during times when there seems to be no end in sight.

Regardless of what you’re going through, the Lord is with you and will bring you peace when it’s time. If you are broken hearted and crushed in spirit, you can find solace in the fact that you aren’t alone.

1 Peter 5:6-7

“Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time. Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.”

God will lift you up in due time. This war we wage with our anxiety and emotions is only won when we’re on or knees. So cast all your anxieties on Him and He is just to deliver you from them.

John 11:25-26

Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live, and everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die. Do you believe this?”

It’s as if Jesus were talking directly to us in this passage. Do you really believe? If you truly do then you know as a follower of Jesus that he has prepared a place for all His believers.

Matthew 11:28

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.”

Do you need true rest? Then trust the only one who has the power to give it to you.  Surrender to Jesus. Trust in Him. Trust in His plan. And trust in His perfect timing.

When in doubt pray and ready His word. Study it, meditate on it and hold every thought captive to obey Christ.
